About DoChara Tollers

Our family lives in the mid-west where most people take hunting very seriously. While there were plenty of hunting dogs to choose from locally, like Labrador and Golden retrievers, we wanted a dog that was high energy and would retrieve, but small enough to live in the house. We were also looking for a dog we could show in conformation and do other events such as obedience, rally and agility. After researching different breeds, we decided that the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever would fit in well with our goals and our family.

We have been showing Tollers for over 10 years and have 9 Champions so far. Two of our dogs, Clyde and Bandit, have now finished their Grand Champion titles. We try to show as often as we can, but with 3 children, it makes it a little more difficult. We do, however, attend every national specialty event. After owning Tollers, we can confidently say that they are not the breed for everyone. They need daily exercise and attention. They shed their coat at least once per year or more. As mentioned on many Toller sites, they are not everyone's best friend. They approach new situations cautiously and are wary of strangers. However, they are definitely devoted to their owners and are sweet and loving- some, more than others.

As for breeding, we generally try and breed to the standard, but we prefer the larger Tollers with heavier coats like Bandit and Clyde have. That doesn't mean we don't like or won't breed for a different look.  We try to place our puppies in homes that want to be active in their dog's life. We always recommend puppy classes and general obedience for every puppy to help them with socialization. Plus, a well trained obedient dog makes a much better family pet. We can be reached through email at DoCharaTollers@hotmail.com with any questions you might have concerning future litters, available puppies or general information.
